Metrorail weeknight service adjustments for Monday, March 20 through Friday, March 24

Monday, March 20 through Friday, March 24

Hours: Mon-Thurs 5 a.m. - midnight; Fri 5 a.m. - 1 a.m.
Service: Normal service on all lines during daytime and evening hours to all 97 stations.
Yellow Line No service through May.

Maintenance: Red LineTrains transition to every 12-15 minutes after 9 p.m., with single tracking beginning at 10 p.m.  

Blue Line Orange Line Silver Line Blue Line+ trains transition to every 15-22 minutes after 9 p.m., with single tracking beginning at 10 p.m. certain days of the week.

Metro will operate normal service on all lines during daytime and evening hours, with scheduled maintenance after 10 p.m. on the Red Line between Silver Spring and Forest Glen (Mon-Thurs) and Farragut North to Dupont Circle (Fri); Blue Line and Silver Line between Benning Rd to Addison Rd (Mon-Thurs) and Smithsonian to Federal Center SW (Fri); and Blue Plus + Line and Orange Line between Smithsonian to Federal Center SW (Fri). The work includes rail replacement, concrete restoration, fiber-optic cable and jumper installation, and leak mitigation. 

Major capital infrastructure improvements continue on the Yellow Line Tunnel and Bridge Rehabilitation Project over the Potomac River to replace the steel liner in the decades old tunnel and repair the bridge due to excessive wear, corrosion and water infiltration issues. Due to the project, Yellow Line service will not operate over the bridge through May 2023. Instead, Yellow Line stations will be served by additional Blue Plus and Green Line trains. 

Detailed service information:


Red Line Red Line

Mon: Trains every 8 minutes between 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. and 10 minutes other times. After 9 p.m., trains begin to transition to every 15 minutes until close.

Tues-Thurs: Trains every 8 minutes. After 9 p.m., trains begin to transition to every 15 minutes until close. 

Fri: Trains every 8 minutes between 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m.; every 10 minutes all other times. After 9 p.m., trains begin to transition to every 12 minutes until close.

Scheduled maintenance & track work: 

After 10 p.m., Mon-Thurs only, single tracking between Silver Spring and Forest Glen due to leak mitigation: 

  • Trains operate every 15 minutes. 
After 10 p.m., Fri, single tracking between Farragut North and Dupont Circle due to concrete restoration:

  • Trains operate every 12 minutes. 

Blue Line Blue Line

Mon-Fri: Trains every 12 minutes between 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m.; 15 minutes all other times. Then after 9 p.m., trains transition to every 22 minutes until close. 

Blue Line+ Blue Plus (Yellow Line replacement)

Mon-Thurs: Trains every 12 minutes between 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. from Huntington to New Carrollton until approximately 9 p.m., then every 15 minutes until closing between Huntington and New Carrollton.

Fri: Trains every 12 minutes between 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m.; 15 minutes all other times between Huntington and New Carrollton; after 9 p.m., every 22 minutes between Huntington and Reagan National Airport until closing. 

Due to Yellow Line Tunnel and Bridge Rehabilitation through May 2023:

  • Additional Blue Plus service will operate between Huntington and New Carrollton. 
Scheduled maintenance & track work:

After 10 p.m., Mon-Thurs only, single tracking between Benning Rd and Addison Rd due to rail replacement; and after 10 p.m., Fri, single tracking between Smithsonian and Federal Center SW due to fiber-optic cable and jumper cable installation:

  • Trains every 22 minutes until closing.
  • Blue+ trains will operate between Huntington and Reagan National Airport only on Fri. Transfer to/from Blue Line to continue trip.

Orange Line Orange Line

Mon: Every 15 minutes until 9 p.m., then every 15 minutes until closing. 

Tues-Thurs: Trains every 12 minutes between 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m.; 15 minutes all other times. 

Fri: Trains every 12 minutes between 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. and 15 minutes all other times; after 9 p.m., transitions to every 22 minutes until closing. 

Scheduled maintenance & track work:

After 10 p.m., Fri only, single tracking between Smithsonian and Federal Center SW due to fiber-optic cable and jumper cable installation:

  • Trains every 22 minutes until closing.

Silver Line Silver Line

Mon-Fri: Trains every 12 minutes between 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. and 15 minutes all other times until approximately 9 p.m., then service transitions to every 22 minutes.

Scheduled maintenance & track work:

After 10 p.m., Mon-Thurs, single tracking between Benning Rd and Addison Rd due to rail replacement:

  • Trains every 22 minutes until closing.
After 10 p.m. Fri, single tracking between Smithsonian and Federal Center SW due to fiber-optic cable and jumper cable installation: 

  • Trains every 22 minutes until closing. 

Yellow Line Yellow Line

No Yellow Line service.

Due to Yellow Line Tunnel and Bridge Rehabilitation:

  • No Yellow Line service. Use Blue or Green lines instead. 
    • Additional Blue Plus service will operate between Huntington and New Carrollton stations every 15 minutes. 
    • Green Line trains will operate every eight minutes. 

  • Free Limited shuttles will be available during weekday rush hours only as follows: 

  • VA-DC Shuttle 1: Crystal City-L'Enfant (6:20 a.m. - 9:25 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. - 8:10 p.m.)
    • Service between Crystal City, Pentagon City, Smithsonian, and L'Enfant Plaza stations every 12 minutes. Shuttle does not stop at Pentagon Station.

  • VA-DC Shuttle 2: Pentagon-Archives (6:20 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.)
    • Service between Pentagon, Smithsonian, Archives, & 11th & F Streets NW (near Metro Center) every 12 minutes.

  • VA-DC Shuttle 3: Mt. Vernon-Potomac Park (former 11Y Route) (5 a.m. - 9:15 a.m. and 3:10 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.)
    • Service between Mt. Vernon, Alexandria, and Potomac Park every 20 minutes. Peak direction service only.
    • Peak direction is toward Washington, DC in the morning and toward Virginia in the afternoon.
    • The shuttle stops at several locations in Alexandria along the George Washington Parkway, including Huntington Point, Franklin Street, King Street, and Pendleton Street. In Washington, D.C., stops are near the McPherson Square Station at 14th and I Streets, NW, and near the Farragut West Station at 19th and I Streets.
