Lost and Found
Customer Advisory: Effective Monday, March 1, 2021, our Lost & Found policy will change. Important changes are listed below:
Starting March 1, 2021, in-person pick up at 6505 Belcrest Rd Hyattsville resumes with proper identification, M-F between 9 am-5 pm. Following the CDC's suggestions for public safety, a mask/face covering is required when visiting our office. Please adhere to social distancing signs.
- The L&F process will apply to wallets and electronic devices only.
- Customers opting to have items returned via mail and must incur the cost of mailing.
Report a Lost Item
There are two ways to report an item lost within the Metrorail or Metrobus systems:
For items lost within the Metrorail or Metrobus system, our online Lost & Found form is the easiest and most efficient way to report lost items. Once you submit information on the lost item online, it will be entered into our tracking system for processing and accessible to Lost & Found personnel. Within 30 minutes, you will receive a confirmation email with a case number. To ensure that you receive a reply, please add the address "firstname.lastname@example.org" to the "white list" of any spam filter that may be running on your home computer or office email system. If you reply to the confirmation email with the additional lost item information, it will automatically route to the appropriate person/department handling your report. Please note, if your item is found, it may take up to five business days to reach our Lost & Found department.
You can also report your lost item by phone. You may contact our Lost & Found office at 202-962-1195 during the following hours: Monday-Friday 9 am - 5 pm, excluding federal holidays. A customer service representative will record your information and provide you with a case number. Please reference your case number in all communications regarding your lost item. A Lost & Found customer service representative will search the system for matching found items. If a match is found, we will contact you by email or phone to verify your item.
Metro Lost & Found staff members are available via telephone to assist Monday through Friday from 9 am - 5 pm by calling 202-962-1195. The Lost & Found Office is closed on weekends and federal holidays.
Metro makes every attempt to return lost items to their rightful owners with-in 30 days. Repeated visits, calls, or emails to our Lost & Found office will not help the process work more efficiently. For further information, see the FAQ.
Unclaimed items are destroyed, disposed of, donated to charity, or auctioned off.
