Senior SmarTrip - Fee Elimination - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)


1. Where can I add stored vaue and passes to my Senior SmarTrip card?

You can add value and passes to your Senior SmarTrip card at any Metrorail fare vending machine, online using your SmarTrip account or the SmarTrip Mobile App, or by visiting a sales location at select retail stores, like CVS pharmacy, Giant Food and Commuter Stores.

To add stored value to your virtual card, you can use Apple Wallet, or Google Wallet by following our Mobile Pay instructions. You can also add stored value to a card at any bus farebox that accepts SmarTrip.

2. Can I get a virtual Senior SmarTrip card on my mobile phone?

Yes. After you obtain a plastic Senior SmarTrip card, you can transfer it to your mobile phone's Apple Wallet or Google Pay by following our Mobile Pay instructions.

3. How do I replace a lost or damaged Senior SmarTrip card?

If you have a virtual Senior SmarTrip card in your Apple Wallet, then follow these replacement instructions.

Otherwise, if you added your card to a SmarTrip online account and you can wait a few days for mail delivery, then the best option is to use our self-service card replacement feature. Simply login to your account, click on your card number, click Replace Lost or Damaged Card on the right side, and follow the prompts. You can also call 888-SMARTRIP to have a replacement card mailed to you.

If you need a replacement card immediately, then you can get one at any of the in-person locations listed above.

4. I obtained a Senior SmarTrip card prior to the $2.00 card fee waiver that started on January 16, 2024. Will my $2.00 card fee be reimbursed?

No.

5. Can I get another Senior SmarTrip card if I already have one?

No. Each eligible customers (65 and older) can only have one active Senior SmarTrip card at a time. If you need to replace a lost or damaged card, then please see the replacement instructions above.

6. Can I enroll for a Senior SmarTrip card at Metrorail fare vending machines?

No.
