Dupont Circle Escalator Replacement and Elevator Rehabilitation

Advisory Effective: 6/1/23 - 6/1/23

En Español

In early June 2023, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing three entrance escalators at Dupont Circle’s north entrance at Connecticut Avenue and Q Street NW. The three escalators will be replaced with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. The escalators are being installed as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028.

During this project the station’s elevator at Connecticut Avenue and Q Street NW will undergo maintenance and will be rehabilitated.

How will this work affect my trip?

From early June 2023 through December 2023, one north entrance escalator will be replaced. During construction, the two adjacent escalators not being replaced will remain operational, with one going up and one going down. During this time, the station’s only entrance elevator will be closed for rehabilitation. Customers who require an elevator should call 202-962-1825 to request shuttle service to Farragut North, the next closest Red Line station. Shuttle service will operate from the Dupont Circle bus shelter at Connecticut Ave and Q Street NW, which is located at the curb in front of the station elevator.

Once the first escalator being replaced and the elevator return to service, the two remaining north entrance escalators will be replaced from approximately December 2023 through July 2024. During construction, the north entrance will be “exit only”, where only one escalator will operate in the up direction to take customers from the mezzanine to the street. Customers entering the station will be required to use the station’s south entrance at Connecticut Avenue and 19th Street NW or the newly rehabilitated north entrance elevator. The station’s elevator at Connecticut Avenue and Q Street NW will be open and fully operational at this time.

Dupont Circle Station will remain open throughout construction.

How long will the project take?

The replacement of all three north entrance escalators is expected to take approximately 13 months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation, and testing. Maintenance and rehabilitation of the station’s elevator is expected to take approximately 6 months and will be completed at the same time as the first escalator replacement.
