Ballston Escalator Replacement

Advisory Effective: 2/28/22 - 3/3/23

En Español

On February 28, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing six escalators at Ballston, including the three entrance escalators and three intermediate escalators leading to the mezzanine. The project will replace the current escalators with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. Metro’s contractor KONE will install the escalators as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028, helping to ensure the regional infrastructure remains in a state of good repair.

How will this work affect my trip?

The escalators will be replaced in pairs, one entrance level escalator and one intermediate level escalator at a time. While these escalators are under construction the remaining two escalators at each level will be operational with one escalator going up and the other one going down. During construction the elevators located at N Fairfax Dr. & N Stuart St. will remain open.

How long will the project take?

The replacement of all six escalators is expected to take approximately one year for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation and testing.

How can I stay informed about the project?
