Metrobus Changes Begin Sunday, December 17, 2023 with 24/7 DC Bus Service

Changes to 43 Metrobus routes will take place Sunday, December 17, 2023. These changes expand service along Metro's highest ridership corridors in response to customer demand and to improve on-time performance across the region. New 24/7 bus service will be added in the District of Columbia operating every 20 minutes or better, improving transit access for customers traveling at all times of the day, advancing equity efforts for those who have traditionally had limited transit options late at night and early morning. 

Highlights include:

  • 24-hour bus service launches in DC seven days a week on 14 routes to improve access along the busiest travel corridors, including Alabama Avenue and Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue SE, Benning Road and H Street NE, and Georgia Avenue and 7th Street NW, among others; 
  • In Maryland, additional weekday morning service will operate from New Carrollton to Silver Spring on Route F4; and,
  • In Virginia, additional Richmond Highway Express trips will serve the Fort Belvoir Post Exchange and Commissary during morning hours.

District of Columbia

NEW 24/7 DC Bus Service
Service will operate every 20 minutes or better, 24 hours a day, seven days a week on these routes:
  • 32 Pennsylvania Avenue
  • 33 Wisconsin Avenue
  • 52 14th Street
  • 70 Georgia Avenue-7th Street
  • 80 North Capitol Street
  • 92 U Street-Garfield (service will extend from 14th & U streets NW to Duke Ellington Bridge when Metrorail is closed) 
  • A6, A8 Anacostia-Livingston (service will extend from Anacostia Station to L'Enfant Plaza when Metrorail is closed)
  • B2 Bladensburg Road-Anacostia
  • H4 Crosstown
  • S2 16th Street
  • V2 Capitol Heights-Minnesota Avenue
  • W4 Alabama Avenue-Deanwood
  • X2 Benning Road-H Street
A4 Anacostia-Fort Drum
  • Service will no longer operate between Anacostia Station and US Coast Guard Headquarters (St. Elizabeths Gate 4) in response to the end of a Coast Guard service agreement. Service will continue to operate between Anacostia Station and Fort Drum.
  • At Anacostia Station, buses will be relocated to Bus Bay K.
A8 Anacostia-Livingston
  • At Anacostia Station, buses will be relocated to Bus Bay G.
B2 Bladensburg Road-Anacostia
  • Some weekday morning trips beginning and ending at Bladensburg Road & V Street NE will be extended to Mt. Rainier.
D2 Glover Park-Dupont Circle
  • Two eastbound trips to Dupont Circle will be added to the schedule, departing 39th Street & Calvert Street NW at 4:57 and 5:09 p.m. on weekdays when school is in session.
P6 Anacostia-Eckington
  • Late-night and early-morning service between Anacostia Station and L’Enfant Plaza will no longer be operated on Route P6. This service will be covered by extended Route A6 and A8 trips between Anacostia Station and L'Enfant Plaza during hours when Metrorail is closed, providing customers with a transfer-free connection between L'Enfant Plaza, Anacostia, and Livingston via M.L. King, Jr. Avenue SE as a part of 24/7 DC Bus Service.
W5 Anacostia-Blue Plains
  • Service will no longer operate between Anacostia Station and US Coast Guard Headquarters (St. Elizabeths Gate 4) in response to the end of a Coast Guard service agreement. Service will continue to operate between Anacostia Station and Blue Plains.
  • At Anacostia Station, buses will continue to serve Bus Bay L.
Schedule Adjustments
  • New schedules will reflect trip and travel time adjustments to improve service for customers on routes 70, 79, 90, A2, A31, A32, A33, L2, S2, S9, X3.
Maryland

D12 Southern Avenue-Suitland
  • In Glassmanor, the route will change to operate along Deal Drive and Audrey Lane to improve operational safety. Buses will no longer operate along Glassmanor Drive and Irvington Street.
  • Customers using stops along Glassmanor Drive and Irvington Street should use stops at Deal Drive & Dunster Drive/Kennebec Street (stop ID 300438 east to Suitland; stop ID 3000441 west to Southern Avenue Station) and Deal Drive & Audrey Lane (stop ID 3000456 east to Suitland; stop ID 3000458 west to Southern Avenue Station).
F1, F2 Chillum Road
  • All Route F2 trips will change to operate as Route F1 trips.
  • Near Avondale and Mt. Rainier, F1 buses will operate along Russell Avenue instead of 25th Avenue between Queens Chapel Road and Arundel Avenue to improve operational safety.
  • Near Cheverly Health Center and at the former Prince George's Hospital, temporary stop changes implemented in September will become permanent. Customers making connections to routes F8, F13, and L12 should use stops on Hospital Drive at Cheverly Health Center (stop IDs 3001348 and 3002941).
F4 New Carrollton-Silver Spring
  • Additional weekday morning westbound trips will be added to the schedule to improve service.
F8 Langley Park-Cheverly
  • Near Cheverly Health Center and at the former Prince George's Hospital, temporary stop changes implemented in September will become permanent. Customers making connections to routes F1, F13, and L12 should use stops on Hospital Drive at Cheverly Health Center (stop IDs 3001348 and 3002941).
F12 Ardwick Industrial Park
  • Near New Carrollton Station, the route will change to operate along Pennsy Drive between Ardwick-Ardmore Road and Polk Street. Buses will no longer operate along Polk Street, Jefferson Avenue, and Ardwick-Ardmore Road east of Pennsy Drive.
  • Customers using stops along Polk Street and Jefferson Avenue should use stops at 3611 Pennsy Drive (stop ID 3001457 north to New Carrollton; stop ID 3001459 south to Cheverly). Stops at Ardwick-Ardmore Road & Ardwick Place will continue to be served by Route A12.
F13 Cheverly-Washington Business Park
  • In Washington Business Park, the route will change to operate along Forbes Boulevard and Business Parkway on all trips. Buses will no longer operate on Philadelphia Way.
  • Customers using stops along Philadelphia Way should use the stop at 4901 Forbes Boulevard (stop ID 3004183).
  • Near Cheverly Health Center and at the former Prince George's Hospital, temporary stop changes implemented in September will become permanent. Customers making connections to routes F1, F8, and L12 should use stops on Hospital Drive at Cheverly Health Center (stop IDs 3001348 and 3002941).
L12 Landover Road
  • Near Cheverly Health Center and at the former Prince George's Hospital, temporary stop changes implemented in September will become permanent. Customers making connections to routes F1, F8, and F13 should use stops on Hospital Drive at Cheverly Health Center (stop IDs 3001348 and 3002941).
Schedule Adjustments
  • New schedules will reflect trip and travel time adjustments to improve service for customers on routes 89M, C21, C22, F1.
Virginia

3F, 3Y Langston Boulevard-McPherson Square
  • In downtown DC, the eastbound route will change to serve K, 11th, G, and 13th streets NW to McPherson Square to improve operational safety. Buses will no longer turn from eastbound K Street to southbound 14th Street NW across the K Street service road.
  • Customers using the stop on southbound 14th & I (Eye) streets NW (stop ID 1001169) should use stops along K Street near 13th and 14th streets NW.
16Y Columbia Pike-Farragut Square
  • In downtown DC, the eastbound route will change to serve K, 11th, G, and 13th streets NW to McPherson Square to improve operational safety. Buses will no longer turn from eastbound K Street to southbound 14th Street NW across the K Street service road.
  • Customers using the stop on southbound 14th & I (Eye) streets NW (stop ID 1001169) should use stops along K Street near 13th and 14th streets NW.
29K, 29N Alexandria-Fairfax
  • Early morning trips that bypass the former Landmark Mall (remaining on Duke Street) will be changed to serve the Landmark Transit Center. All trips will serve Landmark Transit Center with this change, providing consistent connections with Alexandria DASH routes.
REX Richmond Highway Express
  • Service to the Fort Belvoir Post Exchange and Commissary will begin after 5:30 a.m. seven days a week.
  • An additional northbound trip will be added to the schedule between 8 and 9 p.m., seven days a week.
  • New stops will be added at Mill Road & Jamieson Avenue between Eisenhower Avenue and King Street-Old Town stations to improve access for customers in the Carlyle area. The existing southbound stop on Mill Road & Eisenhower Avenue (stop ID 4001075) will no longer be served.
