Reconstruction advances as West Falls Church and Silver Line stations prepare for reopening

Published: Thursday, August 13, 2020

With service resuming on the Silver Line and West Falls Church Station reopening on August 16, significant progress has been achieved to reach this milestone. At all four stations being reconstructed this summer, crews have been working at a great pace. Tile work on the platforms and station mezzanines is near completion with mostly detail and grout work remaining, and new skylights and roofing are near completion as well. The installation of new customer shelters and passenger information screens is also well underway.

Vienna

At Vienna, tile installation is nearly finished throughout the station, including the platform, mezzanine and both the north and south side pedestrian bridges. Granite installation is also complete at the mezzanine and pedestrian bridge gates. Crews have been working on wiring the station for closed-circuit television cameras, testing the PA speakers and wiring up the windscreens and pylons. Light fixtures have been installed on the ceiling along the platform and the framing for the gable skylight on the sloped section has been completed.

Dunn Loring

At Dunn Loring, installation of the mezzanine lighting is ongoing with the emergency lighting conduit and exit signs already completed. Tile work throughout the station is also near completion with grout work now completed and only detail work remaining. In the upper skylight framing, glass and louvers have been installed and detail work has been completed. In customer restrooms, crews have installed tile on the floors and walls and have begun to install fixtures.

West Falls Church

At West Falls Church, crews continue working to prepare the station for reopening on August 16. Platform edges are complete and slip-resistant tile has been installed throughout the station. On the skylights, all of the glass has been installed and detail work has been completed. Glass has been installed on the elevators and one is fully operational and ready for use. Light fixtures have been installed on the platform level, mezzanine and along the track edge. Crews are working on wiring the station, electrical outlets have been installed and electrical boxes are roughed in for the customer shelters and bathroom.

With Metro reopening the stations to customers as soon as it is safe to do so, some remaining work will continue after the station reopens and service resumes. At West Falls Church, there are two platforms and three tracks, which allows Metro to reopen one platform, while construction crews continue working on the other platform through September 8. Customers will board and alight all trains from the one, open platform. Directional signage will be posted inside the mezzanine to assist customers.

East Falls Church

At East Falls Church, tile work on the platform and in the mezzanine is ongoing, but near completion, with some grout work remaining. The skylights have been fully installed and crews have also completed the station doors and door frame painting. The receptacles for fare gates and fare vending machines have been re-installed. The elevator is now running, and glass installation is ongoing. Crews also continue electrical work at the station with exit signs installed and the new emergency panels turned on.
