Construction crews move to final phase of Reagan National Airport Station work

Published: Thursday, October 29, 2020

Construction crews have made great progress at Reagan National Airport Station since moving to the second platform in September. For those unfamiliar with the station, it is unique with three tracks and two platforms. The first phase included work on a large portion of the first platform (closest to the airport terminal), while the second phase has involved work on most of the second platform (closer to the parking garage). The third phase will complete the remaining sections of each platform, next to the center track.

Over the past month, crews have been working around the clock to complete phase II of platform reconstruction. This work includes:

  • pouring the topping slab (the layer of concrete below the tiles);
  • waterproofing the platform;
  • running electrical conduit; and
  • installing the edge light fixtures, granite edges, and new slip-resistant tiles on the platform.
This Saturday, October 31, construction will move to the third and final phase, ahead of schedule. This phase includes work on the remaining portions of each platform that have not yet been rebuilt. There will continue to be no impact to Metrorail service, and both platforms will be open to customers (aside from sections blocked off to allow room for the construction work).

Overall, the platform reconstruction work at Reagan National Airport Station remains on target to wrap up in late December, so stay tuned for an update with photos of the reconstructed platforms later this year.
