Light shuttle ridership for first week of summer shutdown

Published: Friday, May 29, 2020

The summer shutdown on the Orange and Silver lines is underway, and shuttle ridership levels during the first week remained low as most of the region continued to stay at home during the Covid-19 pandemic. Shuttles have not been crowded and lines to board the buses have been short.
Orange Line Express at Vienna StationThrough Thursday, May 28, there have been approximately 1,800 daily weekday boardings and 800 daily weekend boardings (including Memorial Day) on all three shuttles combined. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Orange and Silver line stations west of Ballston-MU saw average station entries of over 34,000 on weekdays and 17,500 on weekends. With bus shuttle ridership totaling between 800-1,800 boardings per day, this equates to 5% of normal rail ridership at the closed stations.

Find Your Shuttle Bus

Make sure to look for a coach-style bus with “Metro Shuttle Bus” decal on the side. If you have any questions about which bus to get on, we’ll have staff at the stations throughout the summer to point you in the right direction.
