Stephanie Lane's decades long artistic practice investigates the liminal space in which energy transforms from its metaphysical state into physical form. As a painter and photographer, experimentation through spontaneity, discovery, and connection are essential to her process and determine the final outcome of her artworks.

Stephanie Lane's Rothko series is the result of a happy accident. Lane, who is known for her experiments in various media, placed slabs of athletic chalk into pools of highly pigmented Japanese inks to see what would happen. The resulting objects trace the ink's material metamorphosis from a liquid to a solid state as it became absorbed by the chalk. Lane titled the series Rothko because of the objects' uncanny resemblances to 20th Century painter Mark Rothko's square abstractions.

Working across media, Stephanie Lane   explores ideas about opposites, merging, emergence and boundaries. Recent group shows include Wish You Were Here and Best In Class at MoCA Arlington (2024). Recent solo exhibitions include Suspended Animation at Fred Schnider Gallery of Art, Arlington, VA (2023) and Thresholds at MoCA Arlington, Arlington, VA (2022). Lane's work as a trompe l'oeil muralist can be found in both corporate and residential venues including the National Italian American Foundation, Washington, DC. Her photography was represented by the National Geographic Image Collection 2011 - 2018 (disbanded). Lane attended the Corcoran College of Art and Design and holds a BGS from Maryland University. In addition to working as a fine art photographer, Lane is currently an instructor at MoCA Arlington where she has taught adult art classes since 2011.

Metro's Art in Transit program, in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington, is pleased to present artworks by local artist Stephanie Lane. The artworks adorn the construction barricade of the Crystal City station, serving as a vibrant enhancement during the escalator replacement work.

Supported by National Landing Business Improvement District, this temporary project at the Crystal City Metro station is turning a functional construction site into an opportunity for local artistic expression.
