Smarter Bike Parking Is Rolling Out at Metro

Metro is continuing to improve our bicycle parking program. We are moving away from a keyed, annual rental system to a digital, keyless one making bike parking more flexible, affordable, and accessible. Lockers and smart racks will be accessible via an app and will be available to rent on-demand by the hour.

This will make parking your bike more secure and convenient. Across our system, we're investing in new facilities to better serve you: 450 new standard bike lockers, 50 new oversized lockers, 100 new smart, self-locking racks, 75 new repair stations, and 600 new u-racks.

The first  stations to receive new standard lockers are Foggy Bottom (Nov. 17-19) and Eastern Market (Nov. 20-22). Additional new bike equipment will continue to be added at stations across the system in phases. The equipment will be functional once it is installed. Amenities will differ per station.

How Do I Access the New Smart Lockers and Smart Racks?

  • Download the BikeLink app; available on Apple Store and Google Play.
  • Create a BikeLink account.
  • Search the app for real-time locker availability, rates, and other related information.
  • Access the locker: Follow the on-screen instructions to open the eLocker to park your bike.

How Much Does It Cost?

  • The bike lockers are five cents an hour up to $1.00 a day.
  • Smart racks are free to reserve through the app. A credit card is required for verification only.
  • Park your bike for a maximum of 5 days at a time.

Bike lockers and smart racks do not have “Tap. Ride. Go.” contactless payment, or “SmarTrip” tap functionality.

Will My Bike Fit?

Our system will feature three locker types: standard single, standard double-sided, and oversized. The locker type varies by station.

  • Standard Single Locker: Internal dimensions are 77” L × 31” W × 52” H.
  • Standard Double-Sided Locker: Same internal dimensions as the single but divided in the middle to accommodate two bicycles accessible from doors on opposite sides.
  • Oversized Locker: Internal dimensions are 120” L × 43” W × 52” H, designed to fit cargo bikes such as the Bunch Bike, RadWagon, Urban Arrow, and similar models.
