Metro to conduct emergency exercise at Van Dorn Street Station Sunday, November 5

Metro Transit Police and first responders from Alexandria, Fairfax County and Prince George's County will conduct a full-scale emergency exercise Sunday, November 5, 2017, at the Van Dorn St Station.

During the drill first responders, Metro Transit Police, Metrorail and Metrobus operational staff and support personnel will test on-scene command and coordination, communication and mobilization of critical transportation resources.


The exercise will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is expected to end no later than 2 p.m.

Metro conducts quarterly drills with emergency responders throughout the region. This is Metro's eleventh full-scale emergency drill since 2015. 

In addition to Metro Transit Police, Metrorail and Metrobus operational staff, the exercise will also include the Alexandria Fire Department, Police Department and Emergency Management as well as Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and Emergency Management and Prince George's County Fire and EMS Department.

Customer Information

  • Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn St stations will be closed to the public from 8 a.m. until approximately 2 p.m. Metro will notify customers when the stations reopen via MetroAlerts email and text messages and social media. To receive notification sign up for MetroAlerts.
  • Free shuttle buses will operate between Franconia-Springfield, Van Dorn St and Eisenhower Ave.
  • Blue Line trains will operate between Huntington and Largo Town Center from 8 a.m. until approximately 2 p.m. During this time there will be no Yellow Line service.
  • Customers traveling to Reagan National Airport from downtown DC should transfer to Blue Line trains at L'Enfant Plaza.
  • Regular Metrobus service will operate normally.
  • Members of the public in the area of Van Dorn St Station may notice a large number of emergency vehicles on site. Please be assured that this is only an exercise.
