Three Metro stations get new names

In an effort to more closely identify Metrorail stations with the neighborhoods that they serve, three stations received new names today. Metro’s Board of Directors have renamed the Rhode Island Avenue Metrorail station to the Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metrorail station and the Archives-Navy Memorial Metrorail station to the Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter station. In addition, the Red Line station that is currently under construction and has been known as the New York Avenue Metrorail station was officially named the New York Avenue-Florida Avenue-Gallaudet U Metrorail station. The station name changes were subjected to an internal District of Columbia process which resulted in support from the affected ward council members and Advisory Neighborhood Commissions. The stations" names were established to help assist the traveling public in locating both the residential and commercial areas located around the stations. The cost of renaming both the Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter Metrorail station and the Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metrorail station totals $210,840 and will be paid for by the District of Columbia. Metro’s policy requires that the cost to change a station’s name be paid for by the jurisdiction that requests the change. The cost covers the new signs that must be produced and then installed at the stations. There is no cost associated with naming the New York Avenue-Florida Avenue-Gallaudet U station because that station, which is scheduled to open in December, is still under construction and the signage cost is included in the station’s construction costs.
