This weekend: Normal Metrorail service on 5 of 6 lines, construction on Red Line closes two stations

During the weekend of March 16 and March 17, Metro will run normal service on five of six lines, to provide frequent train service to 96 of 98 stations as the cherry blossom season kicks off. On the Red Line, free shuttle buses will replace trains on the Red Line between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Friendship Heights. The Medical Center and Bethesda stations will be closed, while maintaining normal service for most of the Red Line between Friendship Heights and Glenmont.

Crews will perform repairs on the aerial structure between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Medical Center, identified as one of Metro's top priorities in need of repair. Metro will also utilize the closure to complete additional repairs and maintenance in the work zone.

Service will operate as follows:

Red Line Free shuttle buses replace trains between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Friendship Heights. Bethesda and Medical Center stations closed. Normal service from Friendship Heights to Glenmont and trains every 8 minutes (daytime) and 10 minutes (evening) between Shady Grove and Grosvenor-Strathmore. 

  • Free express shuttle bus will operate between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Friendship Heights
  • Free local shuttle bus will stop at all stations - Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center, Bethesda, and Friendship Heights

What Trackwork Are We Doing?

On the Red Line, Metro will perform repairs to the aerial structure between Grosvenor-Strathmore and Medical Center as well as additional work:

  • Replace rail ties
  • Replace a switch in the interlocking where trains cross from one track to another outside Medical Center Station
  • Pour new concrete grout pads
  • Installation of electrical feeder for Drainage Pumping System
  • Install new rail and fasteners
  • Weld sections of rail together to eliminate joints for a smoother ride
  • Fire Safety System/standpipe maintenance
