Metrobus service changes effective June 26 to simplify routes, improve reliability

Metrobus service changes that take effect on Sunday, June 26 will bring major route modifications along Jefferson Davis Highway (US 1) in Virginia, a long-term detour in LeDroit Park in DC, and schedule changes along Kenilworth Ave, District Heights and Seat Pleasant in MD, improving service and simplifying routes throughout the region.

As Metro continues to enhance its Better Bus initiative, quarterly Metrobus service changes are implemented to improve service reliability and enrich the customer experience.

Among the highlights of service changes effective June 26:

  • Route 9A will be discontinued, alternatively 10A will travel between Huntington Metrorail station and Old Town Alexandria. Route 10E peak service will operate along Powhatan Street and Metroway service will travel along Jefferson Davis Highway (US 1) near Potomac Yard.
  • Route 10E will operate during peak periods between Hunting Point, Old Town Alexandria, Powhatan Street, Slaters Lane, Jefferson Davis Highway, Potomac Avenue, Main Line Boulevard, Monroe Street and Mount Vernon Avenue to continue to the Pentagon on the existing Route 10E. Every other Route 10E trip will extend to Rosslyn from the Pentagon.
  • Route G2 will have a long term detour through LeDroit Park due to a DC Water project.
  • Route R12 trip times along Kenilworth Avenue and Route V14 in District Heights and Seat Pleasant will be adjusted to improve transfers between the two lines at Deanwood Metrorail Station.

VIRGINIA

1A, 1B, 1E, 1Z Wilson Boulevard-Vienna

  • Route 1Z trips will be replaced by Route 1A trips.
  • Route 1B will no longer serve Seven Corners Transit Center. Customers can use Route 1A as an alternative.
  • Route 1E will be discontinued in August 2016.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

1C Fair Oaks-Fairfax Boulevard

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

2B Fair Oaks-Jermantown Road

  • New Sunday service will be added between 6:15 AM and 10:15 PM, and will operate hourly.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

3T Pimmit Hills

  • Service between West Falls Church and East Falls Church Metrorail stations within the City of Falls Church will be discontinued.
  • Peak service will operate every 24 minutes.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

4A, 4B Pershing Drive-Arlington Boulevard

  • Saturday Route 4A service will be discontinued.
  • Saturday Route 4B service will operate every 45 minutes.

9A Huntington-Pentagon

  • Route 9A will be discontinued.
  • Route 10A will operate between Huntington Metrorail Station and Old Town Alexandria.
  • Route 10E peak service will operate along Powhatan Street.
  • Metroway service will operate along Jefferson Davis Highway (US 1) near Potomac Yard.
  • See new Route 10A, 10E timetables for alternatives.

10A, 10E, 10R, 10S Hunting Point-Pentagon

  • Route 10A service to Hunting Point will be discontinued and will operate between Huntington Metrorail Station and Old Town Alexandria to replace discontinued Route 9A.
  • Route 10E will operate during peak periods between Hunting Point, Old Town Alexandria, Powhatan Street, Slaters Lane, Jefferson Davis Highway, Potomac Avenue, Main Line Boulevard, Monroe Street and Mount Vernon Avenue to continue to the Pentagon on the existing Route 10E.
  • Every other Route 10E trip will extend to Rosslyn from the Pentagon.
  • Routes 10R and 10S will be discontinued.

10B Hunting Point-Ballston

  • Sunday service will operate every 30 minutes.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

15M George Mason University-Tysons Corner

  • Route 15M will be discontinued.
  • Alternative service along Chain Bridge Road (VA 123) is provided by Fairfax Connector Route 463.

17M Kings Park

  • Route 17M morning trips will begin on westbound Edsall Road at Clifton Street to replace discontinued Route 18E service.
  • Route 17M afternoon trips will end on eastbound Edsall Road at Industrial Drive to replace discontinued Route 18E service.

18E, 18F Springfield

Routes 18E and 18F will be discontinued.

  • Service along Edsall Road between Backlick Road and I-395 will be provided by new Route 17M. See Route 17M section for details.
  • Service along Industrial and Commercial Drives will be provided by new Route 18J. See Route 18J section for details.
  • Service along Hanover Avenue, Highland Street, Commerce Street, Amherst Avenue and Backlick Road will be discontinued.

18J Orange Hunt

  • Route 18J southbound AM trips to Rolling Valley Park & Ride will operate via I-395, Edsall Road, Industrial Drive, Commercial Drive, Backlick Road, Amherst Avenue and Commerce Street to Old Keene Mill Road to replace a portion of Route 18F.
  • Route 18J northbound PM trips to the Pentagon will operate via Old Keene Mill Road, Commerce Street, Backlick Road, Industrial Drive, Commercial Drive and Edsall Road to I-395 to replace a portion of Route 18F.

18P Burke Centre

  • One eastbound and two westbound peak period trips will be added
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

21A, 21D Landmark-Pentagon

  • Route 21A will operate between the Pentagon and Landmark via South Reynolds Street, Edsall Road, Yoakum Parkway, Stevenson Avenue, South Van Dorn Street and Duke Street to I-395 HOV lanes. Service will operate every 20 minutes in peak periods.
  • Route 21D will operate between the Pentagon and Landmark Mews via Stevenson Avenue, South Whiting Street, Edsall Road, Bren Mar Park (Beryl Road, Sheldon Drive, Bren Mar Drive and Indian Run Parkway) and Edsall Road to I-395 HOV lanes. Service will operate every 30 minutes in peak periods.

23A, 23B, 23T McLean-Crystal City

  • Routes 23B and 23T will operate weekday peak, midday, evenings and weekends.
  • Route 23A will continue to provide service in the early morning and late evening.

28X Leesburg Pike Limited

  • Route 28X will operate between East Falls Church Metrorail Station, Seven Corners Transit Center and the Mark Center.
  • Service between Tysons Corner and Seven Corners Transit Center will be discontinued.
  • Alternative service along Leesburg Pike and Broad Street is available on Route 28A.

29K, 29N Alexandria-Fairfax

  • Route 29K weekend service will be added between 6:10 AM and 9:10 PM and will operate hourly.
  • Routes 29K and 29N will provide alternating service every 30 minutes between King Street-Old Town Metrorail Station and North Pickett Road in the City of Fairfax.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

42 Mount Pleasant

  • Route 42 southbound destination sign will read "Gallery Place" instead of "Metro Center".
  • Route and stops served will not change.

52, 53, 54 14th Street

  • Route 54 service between Federal Triangle and L'Enfant Plaza will be discontinued.
  • More trips will serve Takoma Metrorail Station.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

60 Fort Totten-Petworth

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

79 Georgia Avenue Limited

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

A4 Anacostia-Fort Drum

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

D1 Glover Park-Federal Triangle

  • Route D1 service between Franklin Square and Federal Triangle will be discontinued.
  • The last trip at 7:05 PM will be discontinued due to low ridership.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

D3 Ivy City-Dupont Circle

  • Route D3 will be discontinued.
  • Peak service between Franklin Square and Dupont Circle will be provided by extended D4 trips. See Route D4 section for details.

D4 Ivy City-Franklin Square

  • During AM peak periods, every other westbound trip will be extended to Dupont Circle (20th & P Streets, NW) from Franklin Square.
  • During PM peak periods, every other eastbound trip will begin at Dupont Circle.
  • Weekday off-peak frequency will operate every 35 minutes.

E2 Ivy City-Fort Totten

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

E4 Military Road-Crosstown

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

G2 P Street-LeDroit Park

  • A long-term detour through LeDroit Park will be put in place due to a DC Water project.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times to accommodate the detour.

G8 Rhode Island Avenue

  • Two westbound AM peak trips starting at Brookland-CUA Metrorail Station will be extended to start at Avondale.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

L2 Connecticut Avenue

  • Route L2 trips to and from Farragut Square will begin and end on the east side of Farragut Square.

N2, N3, N4, N6 Massachusetts Avenue

  • Route N3 will be discontinued.
  • Some Route N4 peak trips will be extended from Farragut Square to Potomac Park.
  • Routes N2, N4, and N6 will serve the west side of Farragut Square.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

P6 Anacostia-Eckington

  • Route P6 trips will be added in the late night and early mornings between Anacostia and Archives Metrorail stations.
  • New trips will be scheduled to minimize transfer times with Route A2, A6 and A8 trips.

V1 Benning Heights-M Street

  • Route V1 eastbound trips will be extended to H Street and Benning Road SE.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

V2 Capitol Heights-Minnesota Avenue

  • Three westbound Route V2 trips will be added between Minnesota Avenue and Anacostia Metrorail stations.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

V14 District Heights-Seat Pleasant

  • Route V14 trip times will be adjusted to improve transfers to and from Route R12 at Deanwood Metrorail Station.

X3 Benning Road

  • Route X3 will be discontinued between Duke Ellington Bridge and Tenleytown-AU Metrorail Station.
  • Alternative service is provided by Route 96.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

MARYLAND

A2, A6, A8, A42, A46, A48 Anacostia-Congress Heights

  • Route A42, A46 and A48 trips will be replaced by Route A2, A6 and A8 trips to and from Anacostia Metrorail Station.
  • Route P6 trips will be added in the late night and early mornings between Anacostia and Archives Metrorail stations. New trips will be scheduled to minimize transfer times with Route A2, A6 and A8 trips.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

B29, B31 Crofton-New Carrollton

  • Route B31 trips will be replaced by Route B29 trips operating between New Carrollton Metrorail Station and Bowie Gateway Center, via Bowie Park & Ride.
  • Service on Evergreen Parkway behind the Bowie Town Center will be discontinued.
  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

J11, J12, J13 Marlboro Pike

  • The Saturday Route J13 trip will be replaced by a Route J12 trip and will no longer serve Potomac Avenue Metrorail Station.
  • Route J11 trips will become Route J12. Peak period trips will continue to serve the Machinists Building. For these trips, the Route J12 destination sign will read "Forestville via Presidential Parkway."

K11, K12 Forestville

  • Route K11 trips will be replaced by Route K12 trips and will no longer serve Potomac Avenue Metrorail Station.

R12 Kenilworth Avenue

  • Route R12 trip times will be adjusted to improve transfers to and from Route V14 at Deanwood Metrorail Station.

X9 Benning Road-H Street Limited

  • New timetables will reflect adjusted trip times.

SmarTrip® TRANSFER PILOT PROGRAMS

Addison Road - Capitol Heights Metrorail stations

  • Bus customers transferring between Addison Road and Capitol Heights Metrorail stations will be able to ride Blue and Silver line trains free of charge using their SmarTrip® card.

Metrobus Q Line - Red Line

As an alternative to traveling by bus along the Q-line route and to avoid typical traffic congestion, the following options are available to our SmarTrip® cardholders:

  • Southbound: Customers may transfer to the Red Line at Wheaton or Forest Glen stations and continue southbound to Silver Spring at no additional cost. Customers who travel beyond Sliver Spring will be charged the appropriate posted fare from their boarding point to exit station.
  • Northbound: Customers who travel on the Q-line from Silver Spring or Forest Glen stations, can take the Red Line to Wheaton and transfer back to the Q-line to receive a free credit that will be applied to their SmarTrip® Card within three days. Travel beyond Wheaton will void this transaction and the regular rail fare will be applied.

The free Red Line trip only applies to customers boarding the Red Line at Silver Spring or Forest Glen Metrorail stations who then transfer to the Q Line buses at Wheaton.
