Metro reminds customers of construction on the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines impacting service Friday through Martin Luther King Jr. Day

MDOT MTA Purple Line construction to also impact Red Line service during weekend

Metro customers on the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines are encouraged to plan ahead if traveling on Metro Friday, Jan. 12 and through Monday, Jan. 15, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. As first announced last month, Metro will be performing track work and maintenance over the four-day period, with no train service between Foggy Bottom-GWU and Arlington Cemetery/Clarendon.

Free express and local shuttle bus service will be provided for customers, in addition to other travel alternatives. Customers are reminded the construction will cause significant delays for anyone traveling through the impacted stations and should allow at least an additional 30 minutes of travel time to accommodate shuttle buses.

Metro will perform this work on Friday and over the holiday weekend when ridership is typically much lower than a normal weekend or peak weekdays Tuesday through Thursday. Without the closure, customers would have endured multiple consecutive weekends of extensive single tracking with trains operating only every 26 minutes or other reductions in service.

Instead, Metro will be able to complete the work over a single four-day span. This includes installing new rail, rebuilding concrete grout pads that support the tracks, new platform edge lighting, installing fiber optic cables to support technology upgrades, and other infrastructure work.

During the weekend, Jan. 13 and Jan. 14, Red Line customers will also be impacted by work on the MDOT MTA Purple Line Project that is unrelated to Metro. Due to the project’s proximity to the Red Line, trains will be unable to operate between Takoma and Forest Glen. Over the two days, Metro will use the opportunity to perform leak mitigation and other maintenance activities. Free local and express shuttle buses will be provided.
