Weekend service adjustments September 2-5 for rebuilding
Advisory Effective: 9/2/16 - 9/5/16
Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of September 2-5 with service adjustments on four of six lines. Trains will operate as follows:
- Free shuttle buses replace Orange Line trains between Stadium-Armory and Minnesota Avenue
- Free shuttle buses replace Blue Line trains between Stadium-Armory & Benning Road and Franconia Springfield & King Street
- Yellow and Green line trains will operate regular weekend service
- Red Line trains will operate every 6-20 minutes
- Silver Line trains will operate every 15 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston only
On Labor Day, Monday, September 5, Metrorail will open at 7:00 a.m. and close at midnight. Trains will operate on a Sunday schedule. Off-peak fares will be in effect all day, and parking will be free at all Metrorail parking facilities.
Red Line
Trains every 6-20 minutes | 7:00AM Saturday until Closing Monday
Single tracking between Silver Spring & Glenmont to allow for communication cable installation.
Red Line trains will operate:
- Between Shady Grove & Silver Spring: every 12-15 minutes with additional trains between 9AM and 9PM.
- Shuttle trains will operate between Silver Spring & Glenmont every 20 minutes. Transfer at Silver Spring to continue trip.
Orange Line
Buses replace trains between Stadium-Armory and Minnesota Avenue | 7:00AM Saturday until closing Monday
Orange Line trains will operate as follows:
- Between Vienna & Stadium-Armory every 15 minutes
- Between Minnesota Avenue & New Carrollton every 15 minutes
From 7:00 a.m. Saturday through closing Monday, buses will replace Orange Line trains between Stadium-Armory and Minnesota Avenue.
Free shuttle buses will operate between Minnesota Avenue and Stadium-Armory stations. Please add 12-15 minutes of travel time.
Last Train Times:
- The last eastbound train of the night from Vienna will depart at regular time . The last train will leave Vienna at 11:33 p.m. and depart Minnesota Avenue at 12:40 p.m.
- The last westbound train of the night from New Carrollton will depart 16 minutes earlier. The last train will leave New Carrollton at 11:20 p.m. and depart Stadium-Armory at 11:50 p.m.
Work Performed: 3rd rail power, aerial structure and grout pad renewal.
Silver Line
Trains every 15 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East & Ballston only | 7:00AM Saturday until closing Monday
Silver Line trains will operate every 15 minutes between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston only. Customers traveling to/from other stations should use Orange and/or Blue line trains to complete their trip. At Ballston, transfer between Silver and Orange line trains on the same platform.
Blue Line
Buses replace trains between Stadium-Armory & Benning Road and between Franconia-Springfield & King St | 7:00AM Saturday until closing Monday
SafeTrack Surge 8 - Continuous single tracking weekdays between Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street through September 11, 2016
Blue Line trains will operate as follows:
- Between Huntington & Stadium-Armory every 15 minutes
- Between Benning Road & Largo Town Center every 15 minutes
From 7:00 a.m. Saturday through closing Monday, buses will replace Blue Line trains:
- Between Benning Road & Stadium-Armory stations. Please add 12-15 minutes of travel time.
- Between Franconia-Springfield and Eisenhower Avenue, making intermediate stops at Van Dorn Street. Please add 15 minutes per station stop.
Last Train Times:
- The last northbound train of the night from Huntington will depart at regular time. The last train will leave Huntington at 11:29 p.m. and depart Benning Road at 12:40 p.m.
- The last southbound train of the night from Largo Town Center will depart at regular time. The last train will leave Largo Town Center at 11:23 p.m. and depart Stadium-Armory at 11:37 p.m.
Yellow Line
Regular weekend service Huntington to Mt. Vernon Sq only | 7:00AM Saturday through closing Monday
All trains will operate to/from Mt. Vernon Sq rather than Fort Totten. Customers traveling to/from stations north of Mt. Vernon Sq should use a Green Line train to complete their trip.

- Metrobus service may provide an alternate travel option for some riders. To check, plan your trip using
Trip Planner and select the bus only option.
- Customers normally parking at Franconia-Springfield or Van Dorn street should consider parking at Huntington for more frequent service.
