Franconia-Springfield Escalator Replacement
Advisory Effective: 10/7/24 - 7/31/25
In October 2024, Metro began a major capital project replacing two entrance escalators and three platform escalators at Franconia-Springfield. The five escalators will be replaced with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. The escalators are being installed as part of an ongoing effort to replace 139 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028.
How will this work affect my trip?
The escalator replacement project at Franconia-Springfield Station will start by replacing both entrance escalators at the same time. Customers can access the mezzanine level via the open stairway or elevator adjacent to the closed entrance escalators or via the parking garage elevators. The three platform escalators will be operational while the entrance escalators are being replaced.
Once the entrance escalators are complete, one platform escalator will be replaced. The stairway adjacent to the closed escalator and platform elevators will remain operational.
Following the completion of the single platform escalator, the remaining pair of platform escalators will be replaced at the same time. Units not actively under construction will remain operational. Customers can access the platform via the open escalator, stairway, and platform elevators.
Station entrances, as well as the elevator and stairs from the mezzanine to the platform, will remain open throughout construction.
How long will the project take?
The escalator replacement is expected to be complete in July 2025.
