Metro and emergency responders in Maryland and DC plan full-scale exercise at multiple stations Sunday

Metro Transit Police and first responders from Maryland and the District of Columbia will conduct a full scale emergency exercise at two stations – Friendship Heights and Tenleytown – on Sunday, April 28, 2019, from 8 a.m. until approximately 2 p.m.

The exercise will involve a multi-jurisdictional response at the two stations to evaluate interagency response and coordination during a simulated incident. Metro Transit Police, Metrorail and Metrobus operations and emergency responders from Montgomery County and the District of Columbia will participate in the exercise.

Customer information

  • Bethesda, Friendship Heights and Tenleytown stations will be closed from 8 a.m. until approximately 2 p.m. Metro will notify customers when the stations reopen via MetroAlerts email and text messages and on Twitter @MetrorailInfo. To receive notifications sign up for MetroAlerts.
  • Free shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains between Bethesda, Friendship Heights, Tenleytown and Van Ness stations until 2 p.m.
  • Customers traveling through the closure should allow an additional 15 minutes travel time per station stop.
  • Red Line trains will operate every 10 minutes between Shady Grove & Medical Center and Van Ness & Glenmont until 2 p.m.
  • Customers should tap their SmarTrip card each time when entering and exiting the Metrorail system. Riders traveling through the closed stations will be charged for a single, continuous trip.
  • Due to the emergency exercise response, Metrobus service may be relocated at Friendship Heights and Tenleytown stations during the exercise. Please follow posted signage.

Members of the public in the area of Friendship Heights and Tenleytown may notice a large number of emergency vehicles on site. Please be assured that this is only an exercise.
