Teaming up to take on hunger!

Metro’s Annual Food Drive

Each January, Metro partners with the Capital Area Food Bank to help combat hunger by providing meals to people across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Through the Fill-A-Bus campaign, Metro honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by turning service into action.

With the generosity of Metro employees and community members, we collect nonperishable food items to support families throughout the region.

In 2026, Metro collected 6,438 pounds of food – more than triple our goal – and raised $22,597, increasing our annual contribution by 22 percent.

Why It Matters

Fill-a-Bus is more than a donation drive—it’s a symbol of what we can accomplish together. By filling a Metrobus with essentials, we help fill homes with hope, dignity, and care.

"This campaign reflects the heart of our region,” says Metro Director of Community Engagement, David Horwitz. “Giving and serving are simple acts with powerful ripple effects and we’re proud to roll Fill-A-Bus forward each year, especially in honor of MLK Jr. Day of Service and during America’s 250th anniversary."
