This June, our four Platform Improvement Project stations entered their 34th year! As we continue our #ThrowbackThursday series looking back at historic photos from the stations, this week we’re featuring Dunn Loring Station.

The four stations were conceptualized during the construction of I-66, prior to the 1976 opening of Metrorail. The interstate runs along the former Washington and Old Dominion Railroad and was built to allow track and Metro stations at intersections of I-66 and major roadways. Dunn Loring Station has a particularly notable location at the intersection of I-66 and Gallows Road, just outside the Capital Beltway.

Originally just called Dunn Loring when the station opened in 1986, the name expanded in 1998 to Dunn Loring­–Merrifield, championed by the Greater Merrifield Business Association as the area developed more business communities adjacent to the Metro station. The station returned to its original name in 2011, with Merrifield listed as a subheading.
