Media Advisory: Metro GM/CEO and local officials to host news conference on first surge to impact Red Line riders
Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld will host a news conference at noon Wednesday to discuss preparations and travel advice for SafeTrack Surges #6 and #7, which will result in around-the-clock single tracking on the Red Line starting August 1. Red Line riders are strongly urged to use alternate travel options to avoid crowding and delays.
This is the first time that SafeTrack surge work will affect Red Line riders.
SafeTrack is an accelerated track work plan to address safety recommendations and rehabilitate the Metrorail system to improve safety and reliability by significantly expanding maintenance time on weeknights, weekends and midday hours and includes 15 "Safety Surges" - long duration track outages for major projects in key parts of the system. The overall objective of SafeTrack is to bring Metrorail tracks and structures into a state of good repair by accomplishing three years of maintenance work in one year.
