Weekend track work on the Green Line, summer construction continues on Red Line

This weekend, June 8 - 9, Metro will perform maintenance and repairs on the Red and Green lines, with normal service across the rest of the system. Trains will serve 93 of Metro's 98 stations. Yellow Line service will also extend to Greenbelt instead of stopping at Mt Vernon Square, providing additional service for expected crowds along the Pride Parade route and other Pride Weekend events.

On the Green Line, crews will replace rail ties that support outdoor tracks and insulators; perform deck waterproofing and repair grout pads that secure the rails in underground sections of the system; and clear surrounding vegetation that may impede train service.

On the Red Line, Metro's summer construction and the closure required for the Maryland Transit Administration Purple Line Project continues. The work includes:

  • Replace switch machines and interlocking
  • Perform tie renewal
  • Repair grout pads and remove vegetation
  • Replace roofing
  • Renew fasteners and rails
  • Eliminate joints
  • Conduct tunnel leak mitigation
  • Install digital screens
  • Replace power cables
  • Escalator maintenance
  • Safety repairs
