Metro's Fill-a-Bus campaign feeds families in need -- here’s how you can help
Metro is inviting the public to participate in the “Fill-A-Bus" campaign to drive out hunger and food insecurities in the region.
The Capital Area Food Bank says 1 in 3 people in the region face hunger. Our goal is to give enough food and raise money to provide about 41,000 meals for those in need.
For the seventh year in a row, Metro will bring a bus to Giant Food locations across the DMV. All in-person locations are conveniently located near grocery or retail stores. Bring your donations from home or stop at the store on your way to Metro and drop off your donations before taking the train or bus.
“Metro prides itself on being a huge part of the community, and now our staff is pitching in another way to help -- by giving their time and money to those families with food insecurities,” said Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke. “We want to thank the Capital Area Food Bank for all they do and for partnering with us on the Fill-A-Bus campaign for the seventh year in a row.
“Please join us in donating food or money to the cause.”
You can donate healthy, unopened, non-perishable food items in person outside the following Metrorail stations:
Thursday, Feb. 6
Giant Food at 3521 East-West Highway, Hyattsville, MD 20782 from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 8
Giant Food at 3336 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016 from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 13
Giant Food at 7137 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003 from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
You can also make donations online to the Capital Area Food Bank through the Fill-A-Bus website by Feb. 14. Every $1 donated provides two meals.
Last year, Metro and the public helped raise $16,296 for the food bank, beating the goal of $15,000. That, paired with the in-person donations, created 35,119 meals for families across the DMV.
This year, we aim to raise $18,000 and collect 5,500 pounds of food that will provide about 41,000 meals for families, seniors, and those in need.
On Feb. 15, Metro employee volunteers will help unload, sort, and pack the collected food as part of the President’s Day Weekend.
