Media Advisory: Metro GM/CEO and local officials to host news conference on upcoming 42-day SafeTrack surge

Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld will host a news conference at 1:00 p.m. to discuss preparations for Metro’s longest SafeTrack surge, which begins September 15 and will last for 42-days. Surge #9 will result in around-the-clock single tracking between Vienna and West Falls Church and four weekend shutdowns, including two weekend shutdowns that will extend to East Falls Church. Orange Line riders at Vienna and Dunn Loring stations are strongly urged to consider alternate travel options to avoid crowding and delays.

SafeTrack is an accelerated track work plan to address safety recommendations and rehabilitate the Metrorail system that began in June. Utilizing expanded maintenance time on weeknights, weekends and during midday hours, including 15 “Safety Surges” with long duration track outages, Metro is working to restore the system to a state of good repair and improve safety and reliability.
