Media Advisory: Metro GM/CEO and officials from the DC and Prince George's County to host news conference on SafeTrack Surge #2
Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld will host a news conference Thursday at 10:30 a.m. to discuss final preparations and travel advice for SafeTrack Surge #2, which involves a 16-day line segment shutdown between Eastern Market and Minnesota Avenue/Benning Road that will significantly reduce service on the Orange, Blue and Silver lines.
SafeTrack is an accelerated track work plan to address safety recommendations and rehabilitate the Metrorail system to improve safety and reliability by significantly expanding maintenance time on weeknights, weekends and midday hours and includes 15 "Safety Surges" - long duration track outages for major projects in key parts of the system. The overall objective of SafeTrack is to bring Metrorail tracks and structures into a state of good repair by eliminating safety hazards, increasing service reliability and improving the ride quality of the system.
The plan will accomplish three years' worth of maintenance work in one year. Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld will hold a news conference regarding the anticipated impacts of Surge 2.
