Media Advisory: Metro and local officials to host news conference on major impact of SafeTrack surge #11

Metro will host a news conference Tuesday, November 22, at 11 a.m. to discuss preparations for SafeTrack Surge #11, which runs from November 28 through December 21. Surge #11 will result in severe service reductions that will impact every Orange and Silver line rider, regardless of their origin and destination. During the surge, trains will share a single track between West Falls Church and East Falls Church to allow crews to rebuild a complex area of the Orange/Silver lines to the west of East Falls Church Station.

Due to single tracking, Orange and Silver line trains will operate only every 20 minutes. As a result, all Orange and Silver line riders are strongly encouraged to telework or consider alternate travel options during this surge. Customers can expect trains to be extremely crowded -- possibly without any space available -- during rush hour times.

SafeTrack is an accelerated track work plan to address safety recommendations and rehabilitate the Metrorail system. Utilizing expanded maintenance time on weeknights, weekends and during midday hours, including more than a dozen “Safety Surges” with long-duration track outages, Metro is working to improve safety and reliability and restore the system to a state of good repair.
