Metro reminds customers: Silver Line trains run every 24 minutes Friday; Blue Line rerouted to New Carrollton due to structural repairs

Metro is reminding customers of service changes on Friday, March 16, that will affect 10 stations on the Silver and Blue Lines to allow for concrete structural repairs between Benning Road and Capitol Heights.

Silver Line trains will operate every 24 minutes -- including during both Friday rush hours -- with single tracking through the work area. Blue Line trains will run at regular intervals, but will be rerouted to/from New Carrollton rather than Largo.

As a result, the following 10 stations will experience reduced service (trains every 24 minutes). Customers who normally use these stations are encouraged to use stations on other lines:

  • Wiehle-Reston East (use West Falls Church as alternate)
  • Spring Hill (use West Falls Church as alternate)
  • Greensboro (use West Falls Church as alternate)
  • Tysons Corner (use West Falls Church as alternate)
  • McLean (use West Falls Church as alternate)
  • Benning Road (use Minnesota Ave or Metrobus as alternate)
  • Capitol Heights (use Deanwood or Metrobus as alternate)
  • Addison Road (use Cheverly or Metrobus as alternate)
  • Morgan Boulevard (use New Carrollton or Branch Ave as alternate)
  • Largo Town Center (use New Carrollton or Branch Ave as alternate)
The repairs will address a crack in an 18-square-foot section of concrete “floating slab” under the rails outside Benning Road Station. Metro currently has a speed restriction in place to allow trains to safely operate until repairs are made.

The project needs 72 consecutive hours to remove the rails, fasteners and related infrastructure; extract the existing concrete; pour new concrete and allow time for it to properly cure; reinstall the rail infrastructure; and conduct safety checks.

Metro plans to begin the work at 10 p.m. Thursday and expects to have normal service restored Monday morning.

The Rush Hour Promise will not be in effect Friday for trips traveling to or from the 10 affected stations; however, the program will remain in effect for travel to/from all other stations.
