Metro makes preparations for severe weather and possible tornadoes impacting the Metro service area

Metro is preparing for severe weather expected throughout the Washington Metropolitan Area, which is currently under a Tornado Watch through 9 p.m. tonight. As a result, Metro is deploying additional resources to respond to weather-related issues that may impact Metrorail, Metrobus or MetroAccess service for customers.

Customers are encouraged to stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather. High wind gusts and heavy rain are possible this afternoon and evening. Downed trees and debris may create hazards, as well as slippery conditions on roads, walkways, and in stations. If you must travel, please use caution, avoid rushing for trains or buses, use handrails for stability, and allow additional travel time. In the event of a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning or worsening conditions, seek shelter immediately.

Metro’s Integrated Command and Communications Center is monitoring conditions, and Metro has activated its Emergency Operations Center to respond to weather-related events. Severe delays, disruptions, and detours in Metro bus, rail, and paratransit service are possible due to extremely high winds, road conditions and other hazards.

Teams are strategically placed across the service area, including field supervisors, power crews, custodial staff, tree crews and others prepared to respond to issues to keep customers safe and maintain service.
