Capital Investment and Infrastructure
One way we work to improve Metro is through capital investments: we invest public funds in building, modernizing, and improving our infrastructure, facilities, and operations. Most, but not all, of this work is construction and maintenance of physical infrastructure like railcars and stations. Metro invests each year in rail and bus infrastructure, stations and customer facilities, and supporting technology and services. Types of investments include:
- Construction projects, like adding a new entrance to a Metrorail station.
- Multi-year projects, like the replacement of elevators and escalators as they wear out.
- Very large projects that take several years to complete, like the construction of the Silver Line.
- Ongoing initiatives that encompass multiple projects over time.
- Maintenance, overhaul, and repair of our physical infrastructure, like rail bridges and bus garages.
- Planning that leads to improvements in how we operate rail and bus service.
Capital Improvement Program
The Capital Improvement Program is designed to improve the safety of Metro's rail, bus and paratransit system, keep the region's infrastructure in a state of good repair, and enhance the customer experience.
