Smart Trip in Apple Wallet
Smart Trip in your Apple Wallet gives customers new and unparalleled convenience to use their iPhone or Apple Watch anywhere Smart Trip is accepted.
When paired with the Smart Trip app, customers have access to a fare machine right from your phone! Funds can be added quickly to any Smart Trip Card in Apple Wallet, purchase money saving passes, set up Auto Reload, and check Smart Benefits.
Smart Trip in Apple Wallet is available for regular, full fare and Senior travelers.
Device compatibility
Supported devices include:
- iPhone 8 or 8 Plus or newer
- Apple Watch Series 3 or newer
- Latest iOS and watchOS versions
Card usage across devices
- A Smart Trip card can only be active on one device at a time.
- Separate cards can be used on iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Cards are tied to a single iCloud account and cannot be shared.
Adding a Smart Trip card
You can add a card in three ways:
- Purchase a new card in Apple Wallet.
- Purchase a new card in the Smart Trip app.
- Transfer an existing physical card into Apple Wallet.
Once transferred, the physical card is permanently disabled.
Card eligibility for transfer
- Full fare cards can be transferred via Apple Wallet or the app.
- Senior Smart Trip cards must be transferred via the app.
- Eligible cards must have numbers beginning with 0167.
Add a Smart Trip to your Apple Wallet
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap the "+"
- Choose Transit Cards, then choose Smart Trip
- Enter an amount to add to your Smart Trip
- Confirm your purchase
Your Smart Trip is now in Apple Wallet, ready for use.
Transfer your plastic Smart Trip cards to your Apple Wallet
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap the "+"
- Choose Transit Cards, then choose Smart Trip
- Tap Transfer Existing Card
- Provide your card and account information
- Place the card against the back of your iPhone
- Your Smart Trip is now in Apple Wallet, ready for use
Add Value in Apple Wallet
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone
- Select your Smart Trip card
- Click Add Money
- Enter desired "Amount to Load" ($4 minimum)
Card management
Moving between devices
Cards can be transferred between iPhone and Apple Watch using Wallet or Watch app settings.
Removing a card
Cards can be removed via Apple Wallet or the Watch app without deleting them from your account.
Card limits
Up to 12 cards can be stored on a device.
Balance preservation
Stored Value and passes remain with the card when transferring, removing, or moving it between devices.
Paying for transit
- Hold your iPhone or Apple Watch near the reader until you feel a vibration and see confirmation.
- Express Transit allows payment without unlocking your device.
Express Transit
- Enables tap-and-go without Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode.
- Only one card per device can use Express Transit.
Adding value and passes
- Stored Value and passes can be added via the Smart Trip app.
- Apple Wallet supports adding Stored Value only.
- Passes must be purchased in the Smart Trip app.

Employer transit benefits
Transit benefits can be used if the card is enrolled in your employer’s Smart Benefits program.
Account and registration
- Cards added via the Smart Trip app are automatically registered.
- Cards added directly in Apple Wallet must be registered via the app.
Viewing balance and activity
- Apple Wallet shows the current balance.
- The Smart Trip app or website provides full transaction history.
Auto Reload
- Automatically reloads when balance drops below $10.
- Passes renew automatically before expiration:
- 3 days before weekly pass expiration
- 7 days before monthly pass expiration
Lost or replaced devices
- Cards can be restored from backup or re-added to a new device.
- Cards can be removed remotely via iCloud.
Remote suspension
Activating Lost Mode disables transit use and payments until the device is recovered.
Troubleshooting
Common issues
- Ensure the card is activated and has sufficient balance.
- Seek station assistance or contact customer support if needed.
Transfer problems
Phone cases or positioning may interfere. Remove the case and retry.
Registration delays
Newly added cards may take a few minutes to appear correctly.
Unrecognized transactions
Contact Smart Trip customer support immediately.
Battery and Power Reserve
On supported iPhones, Express Transit can function for several hours after the battery is depleted using Power Reserve mode.
