Metro plans single tracking in two areas of D.C. during winter construction Dec. 16-30
Updated: 10/14/2026
Metro wants customers to know about upcoming temporary service changes on the Green, Orange, Silver, and Blue lines this December. These service changes align with planned work that’s scheduled twice a year to allow crews uninterrupted time to perform critical work to improve safety, reliability, and customer experience.
Metro apologizes for any inconvenience, and we appreciate our customers' patience as we make these safety and reliability investments.
December 16-30: Single tracking between U St and Georgia Av-Petworth
From 10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, through Wednesday, Dec. 30, the Green Line will single-track between U St and Georgia Av-Petworth while crews complete work including repair or replacement of rail and fastening systems, restoration of communications, signal system and lighting infrastructure.
All stations will remain open, with Green Line trains running every 16 minutes. Yellow Line trains will run between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq with no Yellow Line service to Greenbelt. Yellow Line trains will run every 8 minutes every day, except Christmas Day, Dec. 25, when Yellow Line trains will run every 16 minutes.
December 20-30: Single tracking between McPherson Sq and Smithsonian
From Sunday, Dec. 20, through Wednesday, Dec. 30, the Orange, Silver, and Blue lines will single-track between McPherson Sq and Smithsonian stations. Orange, Silver, and Blue line trains will run every 20 minutes on weekdays and weekends.
Crews will repair grout pads, replace rail and fastening systems, perform concrete repairs, and make necessary facility and lighting infrastructure repairs.
Metro scheduled this necessary winter construction work during the holiday season, when ridership is typically lower, to minimize impacts on customers.

About Metro
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), known as Metro, is the region’s leading public transportation provider, serving a population of approximately four million people across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia within a 2,054-square-mile jurisdiction. With a network of six rail lines, 98 stations, 126 bus routes, and a door-to-door paratransit service, Metro is the second busiest transit system in the United States serving 268.9 million trips in 2025 with a $5 billion operating and capital budget. Since 2022, Metro has completed multiple transit-oriented development projects that have brought $15 million in tax revenue to the region from housing, office, and retail space in our community. Safety and security are core values at Metro. Over 30,000 cameras monitor the system, and Metro currently has the lowest crime rate in history with fare evasion on rail and bus declining. In 2025, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) named Metro the Transit Agency of the Year in recognition of industry-leading ridership growth, record high customer satisfaction, a newly redesigned Bus network, expanded rail service, and improved customer experience.
