Winter 2026 Major Construction
Updated: 10/7/2026
Advisory Effective: Dec 16, 2026 – Dec 30, 2026
From Dec. 16 - 30, 2026, Metro will undertake major construction on the Green, Orange, Silver, and Blue lines through two separate projects designed to support critical infrastructure upgrades.
This work is part of Metro’s ongoing investment in improving reliability, safety, and the overall customer experience.
Dec. 16 - Dec. 30, 2026
Metro Rail will single track between Georgia Av-Petworth and U St stations on the Green Line.
- Green Line:
- Weekdays and weekends: Trains will run every 16 minutes
- Yellow Line:
- Service: Huntington to Mt Vernon Sq only
- Weekday and weekend trains will run every 8 minutes
Dec. 20 - Dec. 30, 2026
Metro Rail will single track between McPherson Sq and Smithsonian stations on the Orange, Silver, and Blue lines.
Affected stations will remain open for rail service for the duration of the construction. As this work requires single tracking, customers should allow for additional time between trains when planning their trip.
Normal rail service on impacted lines will be restored on Dec. 31, 2026.
Anticipated construction activities across both projects:
- Repair or replacement of existing rail and fastening systems
- Renewal of communications and signaling systems
- Restoration of lighting infrastructure
- Repair of grout pads
- Concrete repair
