Community engagement
MTPD officers are committed to your safety and wellbeing, but they’re also part of the community. You’ll see them in and around our stations, taking part in public events and meetings, and appearing on the news. Wherever you see them, say hello; our officers work for you.
You may also see them in schools and other environments where they can help educate young people to be productive members of our community and safe riders of Metro. Engagement programs such as our Youth Services Unit work directly with school administrators and students to develop early intervention programs and educate them on our Respect Your Ride campaign.
Our policies
At the MTPD, we embrace modern policing, including reforms that incorporate best practices in law enforcement. We update our policies as the accepted best practices for safe and effective policing evolve, to make sure our officers provide the best possible service to our community.
Investigations Review Panel
The Investigations Review Panel (IRP) is an independent advisory board, consisting of four civilians and three individuals with law enforcement experience but who have no prior affiliation with the MTPD.
The IRP helps us maintain integrity in administering the MTPD. It reviews inside and outside investigations of our police work to ensure we understand the findings and their implications, and helps us improve our practices over time to stay consistent with the latest law enforcement guidance. Every quarter, it makes a report to the Chief of Police and may recommend policy or training changes.
Community Police Academy
To assist the community in better understanding police training, procedure, and philosophy, the Metro Transit Police (MTPD) offers a 9-week Community Police Academy (CPA) available to applicants who are residents of Maryland, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as WMATA employees and members of local civic and governmental organizations.
