College Intern Program
Benefits of the Metro College Intern Program
The Metro College Intern Program (MCIP) offers current undergraduate and graduate students temporary summer employment with Metro, including hourly pay. The program lasts 12 weeks between June and August. All internships are in the National Capital Region.
MCIP is a progressive internship: you can participate over multiple summers, gaining more experience and increasing levels of responsibility. Completing an internship does not guarantee employment with Metro, but by the time you have completed your final summer placement, you may be qualified to receive consideration for full-time employment, “bridging” directly into a job in the same department as your internship.
As a participant in MCIP, you’ll build your resume, form valuable connections, develop communication and teamwork skills, and gain exposure to a variety of career opportunities within Metro.
MCIP participants are paid a competitive hourly rate starting at $14.50 per hour in your first summer, increasing each year to $17.50 in your fourth summer. Participants in Specialty/Graduate Level Internships are paid more, based on their area of work.
Participants also get:
- Free travel on Metro Rail, Metro Bus, and Metro Access for the duration of your internship
- Academic credit (if your college/university allows)
Eligibility qualifications
To be eligible for MCIP, you must:
- Be a current undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university. If an undergraduate, you must have completed at least one year of your program.
- We welcome applications from graduate students.
- Be majoring in coursework relevant to the position you are applying for.
- Have a minimum cumulative 2.8 GPA.
- Be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
- Live in the National Capital Region for the duration of the internship. (Metro does not provide housing for interns.)
Regular full-time or part-time Metro employees are not eligible for the program.
Applying for MCIP
The summer MCIP application period is currently closed.
When internships are available, you can apply online on MetroConnect, our careers portal. You can apply for more than one internship. If your credentials meet the requirements, the hiring manager will decide whether to invite you for an interview. If selected, you will have to pass a background check.
Intern recruitment typically takes place from November to March as Metro determines which intern positions are needed and can be funded. Most internships last through the summer months, and many MCIP interns are invited to return in subsequent summers during their college years. On a case-by-case basis, some interns may be invited to return to work for Metro during their winter break or during the school year.
When you complete your internship and have finished your college or university program, you may choose to apply for regular full-time employment at Metro.
(Referrals, relatives, and associates of Metro employees don’t receive special consideration. You won’t be permitted to work in the same Metro department as a close relative, and you need to disclose any Metro relationships when you apply.)
