Looking to save money on your daily commute? In town for a visit and looking for an affordable way to get around? Metro offers a range of daily, weekly, and monthly unlimited passes to fit your needs.
How to buy a pass
Passes can be purchased in the Smart Trip app and then added to your mobile wallet or can be added to your plastic Smart Trip card online, at Fare Vending Machines located in Metro Rail stations, and at the Commuter stores or retail outlets.
Available passes
Passes provide unlimited Metro Rail and Metro Bus travel, and cover the first $2.25 of fare on Metro Bus Express Routes.

Regional Bus Pass

* Seniors and people with disabilities are eligible for the reduced price 7-Day Regional Bus Pass.
Reduced fares are available for people with disabilities, seniors, and customers enrolled in Metro Lift.
Passes and Smart Benefits
Smart Benefits Transit Pass Benefits can be used to pay for passes, except for the 1-Day Unlimited Pass.
How passes work
1-, 3-, and 7-Day Unlimited Passes
- Pass is activated the first time Smart Trip is tapped at a fare gate or bus farebox
- Pass expires at the end of the last consecutive operating day
7-Day Short Trip Pass
- Pass is activated the first time it is used
- Pass expires at the end of the seventh consecutive operating day
- Covers unlimited trips on Metro Rail up to a fare of $4.50 - the difference is deducted from Stored Value funds or Smart Benefits on your Smart Trip Card
- Note: Stored Value is cash you have loaded to your Smart Trip Card that can be applied to rides or parking at Metro facilities.
- Covers the first $2.25 of fare on Metro Bus Express Routes
Monthly Unlimited Passes
- Passes are available for a number of fare levels; use the Trip Planner to find the right fare level for you
- Passes are good for one calendar month based on date of purchase:
- Before the 15th day of the month, pass starts when the Smart Trip Card is tapped at a rail station or on a bus and is valid for the remainder of the current month.
- After the 15th day of the month, pass is valid for the following month, starting on the first day of the month.
- Covers the first $2.25 of fare on Metro Bus Express Routes
7-Day Regional Bus Pass
- Pass is activated the first time it is used
- Valid for seven (7) consecutive days of unlimited rides (up to $2.25) on Metro Bus, ART, CUE, DASH, Fairfax Connector, TheBus, and Ride On
- A $2.25 credit is applied toward Metro Bus Express Routes - the difference is deducted from Stored Value funds or Smart Benefits on your Smart Trip Card
- Can be paid for with Smart Benefits Transit Pass Benefits
Transit Link Cards
- Works like a monthly pass on MARC, VRE, or MTA Commuter Buses
- Unlimited Metro Rail rides from the first day to the last day of the month
- Unlimited regular Metro Bus rides for a full month - additional charge applied for express buses
- Transit Link Cards can be purchased at Commuter Direct; the commuter stores at Ballston, Rosslyn, Crystal City, and Takoma Langley Crossroads Transit Center; and the MARC Odenton train station - Transit Link Cards cannot be purchased at the Metro Sales Office
