Metro hosts community open house to share information about RFK Campus redevelopment transit improvement plans

Transit improvements are coming to the RFK Stadium complex and surrounding area. More than 125 community members attended an open house hosted by Metro, in partnership with D.C. Councilmembers Wendell Felder (Ward 7) and Charles Allen (Ward 6), DDOT, and the RFK Stadium Project Management Office on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at St. Coletta of Greater Washington.
Attendees had the opportunity to visit three information stations to learn about the feasibility study Metro conducted, the “Gold Line” Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route planned for the area, enhancements to the existing Stadium-Armory station and ask questions of Metro staff. A fourth information station was available for community members to provide comments and feedback on the planned transit improvements.
In addition to area residents, representatives of the District's industry groups, small businesses and major employers were also in attendance to learn and share thoughts about these projects, and the economic development opportunities they can bring for the neighborhood and across DC.
The concept for the Gold Line BRT includes center-running, dedicated bus lanes on H St NE and Benning Rd NE. The Gold Line BRT would also build a new transit plaza adjacent to the stadium that would deliver capacity, convenience, and competitive travel time to Union Station, reduce pressure on Stadium-Armory, and improve service for the Kingman Park neighborhood.
Proposed enhancements at the Stadium-Armory station include the installation of additional elevators, escalators, and a new mezzanine. A wider North entrance to the station is also under consideration. Together, these improvements would increase station accessibility and capacity, enabling customers to safely move from the RFK Stadium campus to trains.
Metro will now work to finalize concept designs and begin the design and engineering phase for the improvements to Stadium-Armory and the proposed Gold Line BRT route and transit plaza near the stadium complex.
The goal is to complete the Stadium-Armory upgrades and begin Gold Line BRT operations by August 2030, in time for the 2030 NFL season, when the new stadium is set to open.
