Construction work concludes on the Blue Line this Saturday, moves to Green Line next Saturday

Franconia-Springfield and Van Dorn Street stations on the Blue Line reopen this Sunday after Metro successfully finished three weeks of track work on time.
Crews updated the train control and signaling system, renewed rails and ties for a smoother ride, and repaired lighting for better visibility. We thank customers for their patience as we continue to make Metro safe, frequent, and reliable for the future.
Starting next Saturday, Aug. 2, construction moves to the southern end of the Green Line through Aug. 31. Here’s what to expect:
Closed stations: Naylor Road, Suitland, and Branch Av.
Shuttle alternatives
- Local shuttle: Service between Branch Av, Suitland, Naylor Road, and Southern Av every 8-10 minutes.
- Express shuttle: Service between Branch Av and Southern Av every 8-10 minutes.
Parking: Parking garages/lots remain open with free parking.
Service: Customers will see normal service frequencies at all other Green Line stations.
Work to be completed:
- Rail renewal, fastener and tie replacement, ballast tamping, and grout pad replacement for smoother rides.
- Installing 102,000 linear feet of radio and ancillary fiber optic cable for communication and train control systems.
- Replacing platform edge lighting to alert customers of approaching trains.
- Improving lighting for better visibility.
- Updating station signage.
- Repairing elevated tracks and bridges.
Express shuttles will stop at Anacostia, Southern Av, and Branch Av. A local shuttle will stop at each closed station.
