Practice Crosswalk Safety
Updated: 7/9/2026
On average, a pedestrian is killed in a traffic accident every 120 minutes. Every eight minutes, a pedestrian is injured.*
Take these steps to safety:
- Never run to catch a bus.
- Don’t walk between buses or cross in front of a bus.
- Use a marked crosswalk to get to a Metro station or bus.
- Responsibility is shared to ensure the way is clear. Do not assume the driver will stop.
- Watch for cars backing out of parking spaces.
- When wearing earphones or talking on your phone, stay aware of your surroundings.
- Be extra careful in inclement weather. Sidewalks and streets could be slick from rain, ice, or snow.
We’re serious about your safety
Metro police, safety officers, and staff are in the system every day to help ensure your safety.
