Bethesda Station South Mezzanine Construction
Updated: 4/7/2026
Advisory Effective: Jul 28, 2025 – Jun 28, 2027
South Mezzanine project
Metro is building a new mezzanine at the south end of Bethesda Station to connect Metro Rail to the future Purple Line Bethesda Station. The mezzanine will not be accessible until the Purple Line opens in 2027.
Beginning in summer 2025, barricades will be installed at the south end of the station to provide a safe work zone for customers. The station will remain open, and train service will not be affected. An accessible pathway will be maintained on either side of the barricade for customers to board and exit trains.
The barricades will provide a safe work zone for crews to assess site conditions, demolish the existing platform, and begin structural foundation work. Future impacts will be communicated as more information becomes available.
Customer impacts
- Trains may temporarily hold outside the station for several minutes. Minor Red Line delays are possible.
- Construction will take place 24/7 behind the barricades, but the full length of the platform will remain accessible for boarding and exiting trains.
- Customers may hear loud noises during this time. “Hot work” will be conducted only during non-revenue hours.
- Temporary lighting is being installed on the barricades to enhance security.
- For your safety, follow all posted signs and directions from on-site safety personnel.
