U-Pass college student program
U-Pass is Metro's college program giving students unlimited rides on Metro Rail and Metro Bus throughout the semester. U-Pass is included in the cost of tuition at participating schools (equivalent to $1 per day).
To be eligible, you must be a full-time student at a school that is enrolled in the program.
Kids Ride Free program
Students ride for free on Metro Bus and Metro Rail within the District of Columbia to get to school and school-related activities.
Students who have a Kids Ride Free Smart Trip card from the 2025 - 2026 school year can continue to use the card through September 30, 2026.
Contact your student’s enrolled school to request a Kids Ride Free Smart Trip card for the 2026 - 2027 school year.
Kids Ride Free: eligibility
District of Columbia students ages 5 to 21 enrolled in an elementary or secondary public, charter, private, or parochial school located within the District, or a ward of DC through the foster care system, are eligible.
Kids Ride Free + Apple Wallet
DC Students: If you have an iPhone, add your Kids Ride Free Smart Trip card to your Apple Wallet!
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap the +
- Select “Transit Card” then choose “Smart Trip”
- Tap “Transfer Existing Card”
- Enter your card and account details, then agree to the Smart Trip Terms and Conditions
- Place your card on a flat surface and rest the back of your phone against it
