Using a Smart Trip card

Smart Trip cards work the same way wether you have a physical plastic card or are using it in a mobile wallet.

• On Metro Rail, tap at the faregates at both the start and end of your trip.
• On Metro Bus, you only need to tap when you get on. 
• For parking, pay when you exit the garage.

Common questions

Do I need to tap when changing rail lines?

While traveling within the rail system, you only need to tap when entering and exiting.

If you transfer outside of rail to a bus or another transit agency, you must tap your Smart Trip card and a fee may apply.

How should I care for a plastic Smart Trip card?

Plastic Smart Trip cards are durable but should be treated like cash or a credit card. Do not bend, puncture, or wash the card.

Does my child need their own Smart Trip?

Everyone age 5 and older must have their own Smart Trip card to use Metro.
