Elevator Modernization
Providing Access for all Metro Customers
Since the Metro Rail system first opened in 1976, every Metro station has featured elevator access connecting the street level with the platforms. This ensures safe and reliable access for all customers, including those with accessibility needs.
Elevator maintenance
Metro's elevator maintenance process follows a strict schedule, with monthly and annual maintenance on all 350+ elevators. This maintenance process also includes full modernization work every 10-15 years, which requires replacing nearly all parts of a unit and results in a "like new" elevator.
Our last elevator modernization project began in 2014 and ended in 2023. We rehabilitated 102 elevators and completed the project nearly one year early and on budget. Our next elevator modernization project will tentatively begin Winter 2025.
The purpose of elevator rehabilitations is to bring Metro's elevators to a state of good repair and provide a reliable, accessible form of vertical transportation for all customers.
Metro operates two types of elevators throughout its system: hydraulic elevators and traction elevators. Both elevators function differently, so different mechanical parts and processes are needed for each type of elevator. For hydraulic elevators, rehabilitation takes approximately 12-14 weeks. For traction elevators, rehabilitation takes approximately 20-22 weeks.
Generally, all mechanical systems and components in the elevator hoistways and machine rooms are replaced for both types of elevators. Prior to returning to service, each elevator undergoes a Jurisdictional Acceptance and Safety Inspection to ensure elevators are code compliant. These inspections take approximately 1 week per elevator to complete.
