Ground mural
This colorful and engaging mural offers a vibrant moment to reflect on the many forms of travel, history, and environmental richness that shape College Park, Maryland. Incorporated in 1856, College Park holds a significant place in the history of transportation and aviation. The city is home to the oldest continuously operating airport in the United States, established in 1909, a landmark that reflects the area's long-standing connection to movement, innovation, and exploration.
Beyond its history of travel, College Park is also defined by its abundant green spaces and ecological diversity. The area supports numerous varieties of plants and animals, some of which are represented throughout the mural. Of particular significance is College Park’s recognition as an official Bee Campus USA since 2021, reflecting the city’s commitment to supporting pollinators and promoting environmental stewardship.
College Park: A Great Place to Bee’s color palette draws inspiration from the yellow, green, and blue featured in the College Park city logo, while additional vibrant hues echo the colors found in native flowers and blossoming trees throughout the region. Flowing ribbons weave across the composition, symbolizing the many paths, journeys, and connections that bring people into and through College Park each day. Like the diverse community that moves through the city, these lines create a sense of rhythm, motion, and interconnection.
The mural project was led by Brandon J. Donahue-Shipp, Assistant Professor of Art, University of Maryland College Park, in collaboration with and support of WMATA’s Energy and Environment and Art in Transit Program.
