What Trackwork Are We Doing?

On the Blue and Silver lines, Metro will perform repairs to the aerial structure that support the tracks between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road in additional to other maintenance work, including:

  • Install fiber-optic cables for future technology upgrades.
  • Replace corroded third-rail insulators to prevent arcing events and improve reliability.
  • Welding joints between sections of rail to provide more reliability in the signaling system and provide a smoother, better ride.
  • Replace the concrete grout pads, which requires the tracks and fasteners to be removed, demolition of the concrete, framing, and new concrete poured and allowed to set.
  • Replace power cables or “jumpers” that ensure a continuous supply of power from the electrified third rail to the train.

Metro's aerial structures allow trains to pass over traffic and various types of terrain, while supporting trains that can weigh up to 680,000 pounds running every few minutes and double the weight if two trains are passing at the same time.

On the Red Line, Metro will perform leak mitigation in the tunnels and clear drainage areas to help reduce water intrusion that contributes to corrosion of the track bed, rails, fasteners, cables, and other components that require more frequent replacement.
