Metro and DC first responders will hold a full-scale emergency exercise at Benning Road Station, April 27

Metro’s Integrated Command and Communications Center (MICC) in coordination with the DC Fire and EMS Department (DCFEMS) and other first responders will conduct a full-scale emergency response exercise on Saturday, April 27, at the Benning Road Station.

The exercise will take place while the station is closed for aerial structure work on the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines. Free shuttle buses will be provided to the station during Metrorail operating hours as part of the closure for weekend track work.

The MICC, Metro Transit Police, and DCFEMS, along with rail, emergency preparedness personnel, and support staff will take part in the exercise designed to simulate a real-life emergency. People in the area may notice a large number of emergency vehicles responding to the station. Please be advised this is just an exercise.

First responders and Metro staff will be able to test their ability in a rapid response involving a simulated fire in the tunnel and a person struck by a train at the same time. The exercise will evaluate rescue efforts and response coordination and communication between on-scene responders, Metrorail operations staff, Metro Transit Police, and support personnel.

In addition to the exercise, first responders will have the opportunity for additional fan shaft training, learning about and practicing tunnel fan operation and safety protocols, as well as ways to boost radio communications inside the tunnel in the event of a mass emergency.

The exercise will begin at 7:00 a.m. and first responders and emergency vehicles should clear the station at or around 11:00 a.m.

The Benning Road Station will remain closed following the exercise due to aerial structure work, with no train service on Saturday between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly/Addison Rd. For additional information on weekend rail service go to wmata.com/weekend.
