Building the New Bladensburg

Building the New Bladensburg Bus Garage

Metro is rebuilding and modernizing the Bladensburg Bus Garage, a facility rich in history and with strong ties to neighboring communities. Designed to complement the Bladensburg area's evolving landscape, the reconstructed garage will consolidate three existing buildings into one modern, environmentally friendly bus maintenance and operations facility. The new garage is expected to open in mid 2027, and will continue to provide reliable service to our customers throughout the District of Columbia and parts of Maryland while helping to bring Metro closer to its zero-emission goals.

Project Timeline

Project Timeline

Designed for Zero-Emissions Operations

The garage is being built to support Metro's transition to zero-emission buses and will open with approximately 150 electric buses, while phasing out buses that are not zero-emissions in subsequent years.

Zero-Emissions Operations

A State-of-the-Art Facility

The facility is being built with the goal of achieving LEED® Platinum Certification, the U.S. Green Building Council's highest ranking. The new and modernized construction will incorporate environmental and energy-saving features such as a rainwater harvesting system for bus wash, solar panels, and electric vehicle charging stations for employee vehicles. Additionally, it will have improved employee amenities, including a wellness center and recreation rooms.

Improved Safety

Once the project is complete, the main entrance on 26th Street NE will be closed and replaced with two new entrances to improve safety and traffic flow. The new bus entrance will be located on Bladensburg Road NE across from Channing Street NE, while a second entrance for employee access to the garage will be located on 25th Place NE.

Partnering with the Community

We're proud to partner with our Bladensburg Bus Garage neighbors, incorporating community feedback into the new garage. This includes using terracotta siding to blend with the historic neighborhood. Additionally, Metro's Art in Transit team, with input from residents and community leaders, has created a historical representation displayed on the construction fence.
