Traffic Changes Begin In September Near Vienna Metrorail Station

Advisory Effective: 9/3/19 - 9/30/20

Updated 10/09/19

The Saintsbury Drive closure has completed and work has moved to the Vaden Drive bridge.

New traffic changes will take effect around the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metrorail Station in the coming weeks as part of the I-66 Express Lanes Outside the Beltway Project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). On or about Sept. 5, the ramp from Saintsbury Drive to eastbound I-66 near the Vienna Metrorail Station will close permanently as part of the future I-66 Outside the Beltway Express Lanes configuration, followed by a temporary closure of the Vaden Drive bridge over I-66 that is needed to accommodate construction. Important details include:

Vaden Drive Bridge Closure

  • The Vaden Drive bridge over I-66 will be closed for about 10 months starting on or about October 18, 2019 until September 2020 to allow for bridge reconstruction and addition of Express Lanes ramps to and from the west. This full closure will expedite completion of this work and reduce the number of months that commuters and project neighbors are impacted by construction.
  • All Metrorail parking facilities and access points will remain open. Drivers should detour to Nutley Street via Saintsbury Drive (south side of I-66) and Virginia Center Boulevard (north side of I-66).
