Takoma Escalator Replacement

Advisory Effective: 4/4/22 - 3/15/23

On April 4, 2022, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing three platform escalators at Takoma. The project will replace the current escalators with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. Metro’s contractor KONE will install the escalators as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028, helping to ensure the regional infrastructure remains in a state of good repair.

How long will the project take?
The replacement of all three escalators is expected to take approximately 11 months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation, and testing.

How will this work affect my trip?
The escalators will be replaced one at a time. While one escalator is being replaced the two remaining escalators will be operational with one escalator going up and one going down.

How can I stay informed about the project?
Additional information can be found on the Escalator, Canopy and Elevator Project page. Customers are also encouraged to sign up for MetroAlerts text or email messages to receive project updates and service information or contact Customer Service at 202-637-7000 with additional questions.
