Emergency closure of the Rockville Pedestrian Bridge
Advisory Effective: 6/17/20 - 6/30/21
Updated September 25, 2020
Due to a safety concern, the pedestrian bridge over Rockville Pike was closed on June 17, 2020, and is expected to remain closed until mid-2021.
Metro installed signage to notify customers of the structure’s closure and urges all pedestrians who normally use the bridge to use the following alternatives:
- Shuttle Bus Service is available during Metrorail hours between Rockville Metrorail Station Bus Bay D (West Bus Loop) and Monroe St at Montgomery Ave. The shuttle service operates every 5-10 minutes during Metrorail hours.
- Pedestrian Traffic. Cross Rockville Pike at Park Road and Church Street using marked crosswalks and following pedestrian crossing signals.
Metro is developing plans to address the necessary structural and safety issues. We will provide updated information as soon as it is available on this page.
Advisory Issued: June 17, 2020
Due to a safety concern, the pedestrian bridge over Rockville Pike has been closed until further notice. Metro structural inspectors identified conditions that could pose a safety risk during an inspection on Wednesday, June 17. The structure was closed immediately.
Metro is developing durable signage that will be installed as soon as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by the sudden closure of the bridge to ensure public safety. Attempting to cross Rockville Pike outside of designated crosswalks is extremely dangerous, and Metro urges all pedestrians who normally use the bridge to use marked crosswalks on Rockville Pike at Park Road and at Church Street.
Metro is assessing the condition of the structure in greater detail and developing a plan to make necessary repairs and reopen the bridge as soon as possible. We will provide an updated timeline for this project as more information is known in the coming days.
